Automatic Door Maintenance and Service Contracts

NS Motion provides planned preventative maintenance and service contracts for automatic doors across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Scheduled servicing keeps powered pedestrian entrances safe, reliable and aligned with EN 16005, with written records for facilities and compliance teams. We maintain doors we installed and doors installed by others.

We are Alcumus SafeContractor approved and work across retail, healthcare, public sector, commercial and logistics sites, from a single entrance to a full multi-site portfolio on one servicing schedule.

What an automatic door maintenance contract covers

A maintenance contract is a scheduled programme of inspection, adjustment and safety verification carried out on every powered entrance on your site. The purpose is to catch wear before it becomes a failure, and to evidence that each door has been checked and is operating safely.

Mechanical inspection

  • Operator, motor, belt and drive condition
  • Tracks, rollers, carriages and guides
  • Door leaf alignment and travel
  • Fixings, seals and closing devices

Prevents: the slow, sticking or noisy operation that precedes a breakdown.

Safety and sensor verification

  • Activation and presence sensor testing
  • Detection zone coverage checked and reset
  • Force, speed and opening time settings
  • Emergency egress and break-out function

Supports: EN 16005 safety requirements for powered pedestrian doors.

Records and reporting

  • Written service record per door, per visit
  • Faults and recommended remedial works logged
  • Asset register across multiple entrances
  • Documentation for insurers and auditors

Useful for: facilities managers evidencing planned maintenance.

Why scheduled servicing matters

An automatic entrance is a moving mechanical asset carrying pedestrian traffic, including children, wheelchair users and people carrying goods. Sensors drift, detection zones shrink, belts stretch and closing forces change over time. None of that is visible from the shop floor until something goes wrong, which is why the check is scheduled rather than reactive.

Servicing under an NS Motion contract is aligned with EN 16005, the European safety standard for power operated pedestrian doorsets. For the detail on what each check involves, see our EN 16005 automatic door maintenance checklist.

The short version: a serviced automatic door fails less often, stays compliant, and costs less across its life than one that is only attended when it breaks. Unplanned entrance failure also closes a doorway, which affects access, security and trading.

How your service contract is structured

Contracts are built around the entrance and the building, not sold as fixed packages. These are the variables we agree with you before a schedule is issued. Use this as a guide to what your site is likely to need.

Guide to how automatic door service contract terms typically differ between standard and high-traffic or critical entrances
Contract term Standard entrance High-traffic or critical entrance
Service visits Scheduled to the manufacturer's stated interval and site risk assessment. More frequent visits, set against daily cycle counts and footfall.
Safety checks Full sensor, force and detection-zone verification at every visit. As standard, plus checks after any layout, flooring or lighting change.
Response Call-out response agreed in the contract. Priority response for entrances where a failure closes the building.
Reporting Written service record per door, per visit. Per-door records plus a portfolio view across all sites.
Fire-rated doors Alarm and detection interface checked with the door. Coordinated with fire system testing and building compliance records.
Coverage Single site. Multi-site across Ireland and Northern Ireland on one schedule.

Visit frequency and response times are confirmed in your written contract and depend on door type, usage and manufacturer guidance. Contact us for a quote against your actual door schedule.

Doors and entrance systems we maintain

NS Motion designs, manufactures and installs entrance systems, so our engineers service the controls, sensors and mechanics with an end-to-end understanding of how they are built. We also take on doors originally supplied by other manufacturers.

Signs your automatic door needs attention

Most automatic door failures give warning first. If an entrance is showing any of the following, it should be inspected before it stops entirely.

  • Unusual grinding, scraping or knocking during travel
  • Slow, hesitant or juddering opening and closing
  • The door opens when nobody is there, or fails to open when they are
  • Door does not close fully, or bounces back off the closed position
  • Visible gaps, drag marks or misalignment in the leaf
  • Safety sensors triggering repeatedly with no obstruction
  • Manual override needed to get the door through a normal day
  • A fire-rated door that does not respond correctly to a test
If a door has already failed, that is a repair rather than a service. NS Motion runs emergency call-outs for doors stuck open or closed across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Request an emergency call-out.

NS Motion is an all-island supplier based in Kilcock, Co. Kildare, with the same servicing team covering the Republic and Northern Ireland. For groups holding sites on both sides of the border, that means one contract, one schedule and one set of records rather than two suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

The questions facilities and compliance teams ask most often before putting their entrances on a service contract.

How often should automatic doors be serviced?

EN 16005 requires powered pedestrian doors to be inspected at intervals set by the manufacturer and by the risk assessment for the site, carried out by a competent person. In practice a low-traffic entrance may need fewer visits than a busy retail or hospital door, which is why we set the schedule against door type and daily usage rather than applying one figure to every site.

What does an automatic door maintenance contract include?

A contract covers scheduled visits to every powered entrance on your site, including mechanical inspection of the operator, drive and tracks, verification of activation and safety sensors, checks on force, speed and detection zones, and a written service record for each door. Faults and recommended remedial works are logged so facilities teams have a clear picture of the asset.

Do you maintain automatic doors you did not install?

Yes. NS Motion services and maintains automatic doors supplied by other manufacturers as well as our own systems. If you are taking a building on, changing supplier, or have inherited entrances with no service history, we can survey what is there and quote a contract against the actual door schedule.

Can one contract cover multiple sites?

Yes. A single maintenance contract can cover every entrance across a portfolio, keeping all sites on the same servicing schedule and record system. Because we cover both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland with the same team, groups with sites on both sides of the border can use one supplier rather than two.

Is automatic door servicing a legal requirement?

Automatic doors are work equipment and shared building assets, so the duty holder is responsible for keeping them safe for the people using them. EN 16005 is the recognised safety standard for powered pedestrian doorsets and sets out the inspection regime. Scheduled servicing with written records is how most organisations evidence that duty to insurers, auditors and safety officers.

What happens if a door fails between service visits?

Contract customers get call-out response on the terms agreed in the contract, with priority response available for entrances where a failure closes the building. Our engineers attend equipped to diagnose sensor, motor, belt, control and track faults on site, so most issues are resolved without a second visit.

Put your entrances on a service contract

Send us your door schedule, or just tell us how many entrances you have and what type they are. We will survey the site, confirm the right servicing interval for each door, and quote a contract that covers the lot. Existing doors from any manufacturer are welcome.
